A Qantas flight has had to turn around and head back to Adelaide airport shortly after takeoff.

QF1974 was scheduled to depart Adelaide at 11.20am on Monday and land in Canberra at 1.20pm.

But about 10 minutes into the flight, cabin crew and passengers reported smelling fumes, informing the captain, who decided to take the plane back to the South Australian capital.

The plane landed safely, with fire crews on hand as a precaution.

The aircraft will be examined to determine the fault, if any.
