A US restaurant has introduced a “bad parenting fee” for customers whose kids cause havoc during service – and the move has angered many.

The Toccoa Riverside Restaurant in rural Georgia has introduced a dining surcharge after losing patience with unruly young customers and their unconcerned mums and dads.

The dining establishment, located in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains, serves fresh local food – including a $39 ribeye steak drenched in herb butter – with an idyllic waterfront backdrop.

But after a photo of the menu recently appeared on Reddit for “charging extra for bad parenting, the establishment has angered social media users, The New York Postreports.

The warning is stated clearly on the menu, bluntly stating: “Adult surcharge: For adults unable to parent $$$.”

While the restaurant has been charging the fee for some time now, the recent gripe has once again sparked a heated discussion.

“What is deemed as an ‘adult who can’t parent’?” one person asked.

Another said: “Just say no kids…? Kids can be annoying, but they’re unpredictable because they’re KIDS.

“If I read this at a restaurant I would probably leave,” someone else declared.

Several upset diners have left poor Google reviews of the spot, claiming to have been unlucky recipients of the “bad parenting” fee.

“The owner came out and told me he was adding $50 to my bill because of my children’s behaviour.

“My kids watched a tablet until the food arrived, ate their food and my wife took them outside while I waited and paid the bill….Disappointed by the experience,” one claimed a week ago.

Another also claimed to have a bad experience bringing his children to eat at the restaurant.

“Don’t go if you have children. We were 3 adults, 2 children and our four-month-old baby and since we entered to the place they gave us a bad look.

“Later my wife was rocking the baby (not crying, just to make him sleep) and this ‘manager’ told her that you don’t do that in a fancy restaurant (of course this is not a fancy restaurant) and later moved our stroller in a bad way.

“Food is not good either. Do yourself a favour…go somewhere else,” the angry parent stated.

Other bad reviews claim the owner dislikes children, can be rude to customers, refuses service animals and serves overpriced and undercooked food.

“I’m not going to go into details about the horrendous night we had here but would highly recommend not going here,” one disgruntled diner wrote online.

However, despite the protestations of some, the restaurant does enjoy an overall rating of 4.1 stars from its 2,062 Google reviews.

Along with the “bad parenting” fee, those thinking of visiting the restaurant should be aware that customers looking to split a meal should plan on paying a $3 sharing fee — but they’re far the only establishment to do so nowadays.
