A 12-year-old boy has been struck by a car and pinned against a tree in a horrific incident that has brought a major Sydney intersection to a standstill.
The boy was hit about 3.40pm by a car being driven by a 17-year-old boy that had mounted a footpath at the intersection of Gardeners and Bunnerong Road in Kingsford, in the city’s east.
The younger boy remained pinned against the tree for 40 minutes before he was released by officers from the Police Rescue Squad.
He was taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital in a serious condition by NSW Ambulance paramedics.
The driver was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital for mandatory testing, with officers from the Eastern Beaches Police Area Command establishing a crime scene.
The exclusion area will be examined by specialist police.
Motorists have been urged to avoid the area amid major traffic delays.
Anyone who saw the crash has been asked to contact Maroubra Police station or Crime Stoppers.
Police have also asked for anyone with dashcam or mobile phone footage of the incident to come forward.
All westbound lanes of Gardeners Road are closed at Bunnerong Road and drivers have been told to avoid the area.
Bus route 343 is diverting via Day Ave, Houston Road and Anzac Parade, missing up to six stops.
Route 392 buses towards the city are using Bunnerong Road, Botany Street and Anzac Parade to Kingsford Interchange, missing four stops.
