A horror smash on a busy main road is causing chaos for peak hour commuters.

Emergency services were called to Briens Road in Northfield, about 10km north of Adelaide after reports a car had crashed into a power pole at about 4.30am on Thursday.

Images from the scene show debris scattered all over the road.

Briens Road is currently closed in both directions, causing major delays for peak hour travellers.

The road is currently blocked between Hoods Rd and South Tce, with closures expected to be in place for some time.

SA Police have advised motorists to avoid the area and fid an alternative route.

Major Crash Officers are investigating.
