A man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was allegedly attacked during an early morning street fight.

Police were called to the intersection of Kent and Richmond Streets in Maryborough, on Queensland’s Fraser Coast, about 2.30am Saturday following reports of two men fighting.

Police allege a 23-year-old man struck a 43-year-old man during the fight, causing the older man to fall and hit his head on the ground.

He was rushed to Hervey Bay Hospital before being flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

A Queensland Police spokesperson described the Tinana resident’s injuries as “life-threatening.”

The 23-year-old alleged assailant has been charged with grievous bodily harm and is due to appear at Maryborough Magistrates Court on Monday.

Witnesses to the incident are being urged to call police on 131 444, or to make a report online.

Maryborough is about 255km north of Brisbane, and should not be confused with the Victorian Central Goldfields town of the same name.
