A young Matildas fan has described the “special moment” she and her sister were gifted a jersey by star captain Sam Kerr after their nailbiting win over France.

More than 4.1 million people tuned in on Saturday to watch the Matildas battle it out with France to secure a spot in the FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-finals.

After an exhilarating penalty shootout, Kerr was captured by TV cameras delivering a surprise gift to the young attendees in the stands: her jersey.

Sisters Zara and Ella told the Today show on Monday that the moment of kindness that awed viewers was an “amazing experience” that would stay with them.

“At the start of the game, I was hoping to get Sam Kerr’s jersey and at the end of the game it just came true and I got her jersey,” young Zara said.

“I said, ‘Can I have the jersey?’ And, she gave it to me and I said thank you. She said, ‘You’re welcome’.”

Zara revealed to the morning show hosts that she planned to frame the jersey and swore off selling the sought-after piece of Matildas merchandise.

“I would like to put in a frame, but before I do I want to get her (Kerr) signature,” Zara said.

The young fan also revealed her hope to be able to join the Matildas captain on the pitch for the team’s semi-final shootout with England this week.

For sister Ella, Saturday’s heartwarming moment inspired both jealousy and excitement.

“The game overall was an amazing experience,” Ella said.

“Being able to be there live, watching Australia, the Matildas play. It was just … a one-time experience.

“It was amazing to see Sam Kerr at the end of the match, locking eyes with my sister, giving her a hug.

“And, giving her the jersey – that was a special moment … It was just … an amazing experience.”

The Matildas’ trailblazing success has also not only raised prospects of a World Cup win but a public holiday honouring the team.

While it is up to the state governments to decide, leaders have expressed support for a public holiday.
