A pilot is feared dead after a light plane crashed in rural Queensland.

The age and gender of the pilot is not yet known, but it is believed they were the only person on-board the aircraft.

The plane went down at Palgrave, between Warwick and Stanthorpe, about 12.15pm on Thursday.

It is understood a secondary grass fire initially made it difficult for crews to access the wreckage.

Police confirmed there was a distress signal received before the crash.

“At this stage, police have attended and have located a crash scene,” a spokesman told NCA NewsWire.

“However, we are yet to determine the extent of injuries of any person on-board.”

A LifeFlight helicopter was sent to the area but was ultimately not required.

The Queensland Ambulance Service has referred all media inquiries to police.
