A man has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries following an alleged attempted armed robbery outside a busy shopping centre in Queensland’s northeast.

Police allege a 26-year-old man was sitting in his car at a shopping centre on Nathan St in Townsville shortly before midnight on Thursday when an unknown man opened his door.

The man allegedly threatened the driver with a knife and demanded he hand over the car.

It is alleged a struggle broke out between the pair, leaving the driver with wounds to his right hand.

The alleged attack was captured on video by a nearby witness, who approached the 19-year-old man before he fled from the scene.

Police located him soon after on Elizabeth St.

The Vincent man was taken into custody by police and charged with a string of violence offences, including attempt armed robbery, wounding, unlawful vehicle entry, and common assault.

He was remanded into custody to appear before Townsville Magistrates Court on Friday.

The driver was taken to Townsville University Hospital with serious injuries to his right hand.
