An emergency declaration has been declared in northern Brisbane after a man locked himself inside his home.

Shortly after 1.30am on Tuesday, police attended a Peter Street address in Strathpine over a reported disturbance.

Upon arrival, police found a man alone at the home and began negotiating with him to come out of the house.

They worked to get him out of the house for over two hours before they declared an emergency situation just after 4am.

The exclusion zone includes Gertrude Street, Peter Street, Rowland Street and Cavendish Street.

Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and those within the exclusion zone are asked to remain indoors until further notice.

Traffic diversions are in place and there is no further information at this time.
