Three people have been arrested after a security guard was stabbed at a popular Gold Coast shopping centre.

Police were called to Westfield Helensvale on Millaroo Drive at about 7.45am on Friday, following reports the 57-year-old man had been stabbed multiple times.

The Courier Mail report the weapon used was “described as a knife the size of a meat cleaver”.

A spokeswoman from Queensland Ambulance said the guard suffered serious wounds to his head, torso and legs, and was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Queensland police said people involved in the incident fled the scene in a stolen black Holden Trax, however authorities were able to intercept the vehicle at Distillery Road at Beenleigh around 8.35am.

No charges have been made in relation to the stabbing, and investigations are ongoing.

Centre management for Westfield Helensavle said the centre was operating as normal.
