Aldi has confirmed a basket “shortage” at one of its Sydney stores, after photos emerged of shoppers using cardboard boxes to carry around their groceries.
Over the weekend, Yahoo News reported customers had resorted to the act at the supermarket giant’s Westfield Eastgardens, North Strathfield and Waterloo locations, using the boxes – left at the entrance of the store where the baskets are usually kept – in lieu of Aldi’s coin deposit trolley system.
According to the outlet, staff members in-store have speculated a spike in theft of the baskets is the reason for their lack.
An Aldi spokesperson told news.com.au the Waterloo store is currently experiencing a “shortage” of baskets.
“We are working to replenish the baskets as quickly as possible,” they added.
“(We) have introduced a smaller 1051 trolley at a Waterloo store to ensure our customers can continue to enjoy a comfortable shopping experience.”
News.com.au understands Aldi has CCTV in place across all stores as a security measure and illegal activity, including theft, is acted on.
The German retailer only rolled out baskets in its stores in 2022, prior to which customers had to use their own bags, cardboard boxes or the coin-operated trolleys to hold their groceries during their shop.
“Customers that come into an Aldi store wanting ‘just one thing’ will know the feeling of wishing they had more hands,” an Aldi spokesperson said at the time.
“We recognise that these customers are looking for greater convenience when they visit our stores, as it’s almost impossible not to pick up the excellent value products on offer.
“That’s why we’re introducing shopping baskets across all our locations, so our customers can more efficiently load up on goodies (on and off their intended lists) while doing smaller grocery shops.”
